GRAND MASTERS RELAY RUNNERS

The Grand Masters relay runners were at our lodge on June 9 and it was a complete success with members of Germania, Hiram, Etoile Polaire, Perfect Union and Dante represented. As in the past it wouldn’t have been successful without Bro. Eldred Gilmore and family’s help. The runners and guests were treated to outstanding refreshments compliments of Bro. Eldred and his wife Althea. This year was dedicated to Bro. Stan Elpers who tirelessly worked year after year to put the run together. He was called home before he could put together another one for 2007. Bro. Eddie Wellman is now in charge and he asked me to relay that if anyone was interested in “traveling” with the runners to let him know. Contact me. They use their own time and money to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics. -kkueck

PERPETUAL MEMBERSHIP

Bro. Jeff Alloway, even though it is doubtful that he will ever live in New Orleans again, has taken a perpetual membership in our lodge. He remembers the fellowship and excellent degree work and always wants to be a part of it and support Germania #46. Thank you Bro. Jeff. Interested in a perpetual? The cost is $1,000 cash or $226 annually for five years.

REPAIRS UPDATE

If you haven’t been to the lodge in a while YOU ARE GOING TO BE SURPRISED when you do. Brother’s Andy and Melvin Mims, along with our custodian Ken Cox and others, have been working diligently on the hall downstairs doing things first class and at the same time keeping it under budget with upgrades to upstairs in mind. Maybe we will all in the future again see the arched ceiling, the sun, moon and stars that were once part of the original interior of the edifice before moisture, air conditioning; paneling and modern upgrades necessitated the current suspended ceiling and walls. Just imagine being able to see it as our forefathers intended with air and heat of course. Hey, we have to have some modern conveniences.
The air conditioner has been repaired and upgraded; the sheetrock is all hung, taped and floated. Next will be sanding, texturing and painting. The apartment is about 85% finished and will be ready for our custodian to resume residence and we can finally get rid of the ugly fema trailer and plant another evergreen. -kkueck

Poem of the month - "The Old Masters Wages"

I met a dear old man today,
Who wore a Masonic pin.
It was old and faded like the man,
It's edges were worn quite thin.
I approached the park bench where he sat,
To give the old brother his due.
I said, "I see you've traveled east".
He said, "I have, have you."
I said, "I have, and in my day
Before the all seeing sun,
I played in the rubble,
with Jubala Jubalo and Jubalum."
He shouted, "don't laugh at the work my son,
It's good and sweet and true,
And if you've traveled as you said,
You should give these things their due."
The word, the sign the token,
The sweet Masonic prayer,
The vow that all have taken,
Who've climbed the inner stair.
The wages of a Mason,
are never paid in gold,
but the gain comes from contentment,
when you're weak and growing old.
You see, I've carried my obligations,
For almost fifty years.
It has helped me through the hardships
and the failures full of tears.
Now I'm losing my mind and body,
Death is near but I don't despair.
I've lived my life upon the level,
And I'm dying upon the square.
Sometimes the greatest lessons
Are those that are learned anew,
And the old man in the park today
has changed my point of view.
To all Masonic brothers,
The only secret is to care.
May you live your life upon the level,
May you part upon the square.
