LODGE NEWS

NEW OFFICERS FOR 2007

Congratulations to the new elected and appointed officers of Germania Lodge #46, A third of the membership showed up on election night and it was the first time in anyone’s memory that all of the officers were installed on the night of the election. Enthusiasm abounded as W.M. Cairns read out his plans for the new year among them, a Burns Night Supper installation, Endymion Parade (if it is in Mid City), Super Bowl Party, crawfish boil, Honesty and Integrity Award, Germanfest and “The Masters Trip to Scotland! (Call the Master if you are interested in the trip) Peace, harmony and great fellowship flourished at what could be a defining moment in our history. W.M. Cairns cautioned that it wouldn’t all be fun and games though as there was much work to do as far as repairs and fund raising were concerned. Our income has become a trickle because we haven’t had any rent from either the apartment or Allied Music since the storm. The apartment isn’t repaired and Allied Music likely won’t survive because his business has shriveled up to almost nothing since Katrina and the hall needs numerous repairs. Of the members present there were many young faces, our life’s blood, of course there were many old ones - like me. The new 2007 officers are:

Ian Cairns P.M., W.M.
Wilson Revelle S.W.
Glenn Cupit J.W.

A little history on our new 2007 Junior Warden – Bro. Glenn Cupit

I was first exposed to freemasonry 53 years ago, when I became a DeMolay in Concorde Chapter, 1953. Our beloved and recently deceased brother, Dan Mehn was my Master Counselor. I became a Master Mason at 60 yrs of age at Plains Lodge #135, Zachary, Jan, 1999!

My current Masonic Blue Lodge memberships and offices held:
Plains #135, Zachary – 3 appointed offices (JS, SS, MC)
Olive #52, Clinton – 2 appointed (MC, SD), 2 elected (JW, SW)
Feliciana #31, St Francisville – 1 appointed (Chap)
Germania #46, New Orleans – 2 appointed (MC, ME), 1 elected (JW, 2007)
Lodge of Nine Muses, #9, Baton Rouge – charter member (Charter presented Nov, 2006)
Other affiliations:
32°, Baton Rouge Consistory, AASR, SJ
Feliciana Chapter #11, Royal Arch Masons, St Francisville
Past Master, 2004 – Louisiana Lodge of Research
Baton Rouge Certificate Association (York Rite Ritual)
Grand Representative of the Grand Lodge of the State of Louisiana – to the Grand Lodge of Columbia, Bogota

I have also played the 3rd Ruffian in over 50 Master Mason degrees, including three “outdoor” degrees in Hornbeck and Pickering, LA. I traveled to Denver, CO as SD, with Germania’s Scottish Rite degree team to exemplify the Master Mason Degree for Denver Lodge #5 at the Denver Consistory. Of all the Blue Lodges of which I’m a member, Germania is my favorite. I drive down from Wilson to attend Germania’s Wednesday communications, a 4 hour round trip. Several years ago, I found that in addition to my Irish heritage, my great-great-grandfather was German (Endt)! All the more appropriate that I affiliated with Germania Lodge. I am also a member of the Deutches Haus.
I was born and grew up in New Orleans (Broadmoor area) and graduated from Fortier High, 1956 and attended Tulane and LSU. I worked in the automotive service business for over 40 years in New Orleans and Baton Rouge and moved to the Greater Baton Rouge area in 1981. I now resides in Wilson, LA, East Feliciana Parish, 35 miles north of the Baton Rouge Airport, with my bride of 21 years, Betty. I have participated in various types of car and boat racing since the late ‘50’s. I was a young adult, “out-on-the-town”, in the late ‘50s and early ‘60’s when Germania hosted the Rock & Roll dances put on by local radio disc jockeys: “Poppa Stoppa” and “Jack-the-Cat”. I did not realize then, that “Germania Hall” was a Masonic Lodge! I still work full-time and currently teach Automotive Technology at Louisiana Technical College, Port Allen Campus.

NEW CHAIR ARM PLAQUES
There have been four new chair arm commemorative inscription plaques purchased by Bro. Eldred Gilmore and myself. Unfortunately each one represents the passing of a dear friend, brother or neighbor but what a praiseworthy way to remember them. The new plaques read:

IN MEMORY OF
ART LANDRY

1948 – 2006

IN MEMBORY OF
BRO. ERIC BETHANCOURT

1947 – 2006

IN MEMORY OF
DANNY SHIELDS

1953 – 2006

IN MEMORY OF
BRO. DAN MEHN

1937 – 2006

If you are interested in purchasing one call me. There is one chair left on the front row but all remain on the rear seating. All money earned from plaque sales goes to the building fund.

DUES
The 2007 dues have really been rolling in ahead of schedule and I want to thank every one for sending them in so speedily. They should be paid by December 31st of each year. With the cost of doing business, (one example - insurance has doubled) dues will almost surely go up in 2008. Now is the time to consider a perpetual membership. The price is determined on the annual dues so 2007 will be the last year you can purchase one at this price - $1,000 cash or $226 for five years. In exchange, you never have to pay dues again and you will always be listed as a member of Germania Lodge #46 even after your demise. Call me if you want to set one up or if you need financial assistance.

DONATIONS
Thanks to these brothers donations to the building hurricane repairs - Jerry Embree, Andy Kessler, Rob Tewis, Mike Wills, Clayton Money, Danny Cox

I have many emails in my computer from departed Bro. Dan Mehn that I saved for future reference. Here is one of them.

Not one person ever joined Masonry because George Washington was a Mason.
Not one person ever joined Masonry because Harry Truman was a Mason.
Not one person ever joined because of any of our great Masonic heroes. Joining doesn't make you any of those people.
Not one person ever joined in order to give a million dollars a day to charity, or homes, or crippled children. You don't have to be a member to give money.
Not one person ever joined because our ritual is outstanding, or our minutes are accurate, or a hundred other things we worry about. They don't know about our ritual.
They joined because someone they knew and admired was a Mason. It could have been a father, a friend, a man down the street, or someone a thousand miles away.
Who, it didn't matter. They admired him and wanted to do the things he did, and they did it by the millions.
Want to help our growth? Be the kind of man someone admires. Someone will notice.
